“The idea of virtual idols replacing human idols feels unsettling. The industry shouldn’t prioritize profit over the well-being of real artists.” – Soo-jin L., Activist Fan

In recent years, Artificial intelligence (AI) has played a role in various fields, including the K-pop industry. Since the K-pop industry was first started and has been run by humans for many decades, the entering of AI has had a varied impact on the industry. It is leading to controversy of opinion among the public, especially K-pop fans. Fans’ opinions on AI in the K-pop industry are quite diverse, however, we can classify fans’ opinions into 3 groups: positive, neutral, and negative.
The K-pop industry is a distinct example that shows how South Korea is at the forefront of the AI revolution. AI has been integrated into the K-pop industry by creating, performing, and connecting with fans within the country and globally. Below is the breakdown of how AI plays a role in the industry with examples.
1. Virtual Idols
They generate the artist or in the K-pop industry usually called an idol by computer. The AI idol has the same ability as the human idol. They can perform in music videos, hold concerts, and even interact with fans via online platforms. One example is Mave, the AI K-pop idol girl group. This group is supported and pushed by tech giant Kakao, to become a dominant force in entertainment. Mave has released 2 singles which are Pandora and What’s My Name. The group has the same music promotion as the human idols, such as Fanchant and many more content on YouTube.
2. Songwriting and Production
AI can replace human producers and songwriters by generating melodies and chord progressions, creating lyrics based on the idol groups’ specific themes or styles, and fine-tuning existing music to make it more catchy or enhance specific elements. While not publicly confirmed, some predicted that AI might have played a role in composing or producing some elements of tracks by human idol groups such as BTS or TWICE.
3. Content Creation and Fan Engagement
AI can personalize content for fans in various ways, such as generating custom remixes or edits of songs based on fan preference, creating interactive virtual experiences where fans can engage with their favorite idols, and powering chatbots that answer fan questions or provide personalized recommendations. For example, SM Entertainment is experimenting with AI which is called AEs for Aespa to help organize live streams featuring the AEs, where fans have an opportunity to ask questions, make requests, or simply interact with the virtual members in real-time. These sessions provide fans with the opportunity to engage directly with the AEs and feel closer and connected to the group.

The integration between AI and the K-pop industry brings many exciting possibilities. These developments will enhance the K-pop experience, fostering deeper engagement and a sense of connection.
However, amid the AI-powered K-pop industry trend, a dispute among the public especially K-pop fans arises: Could AI-powered groups ever truly replace human idols?
Let’s dig deep into the reasons why the answer is likely to be it cannot replace humans. While AI offers undeniable advantages, it is the uniquely human element that attracts fans from around the world to the K-pop industry. Here are the key reasons:
1. The Irreplaceable Human Touch:
- Authenticity and Emotion: K-pop idols have their own different personalities. Human idols have to prepare and practice their song and performance before release at least 2-3 months. Therefore, fans can feel in touch with them through the hard effort and the emotion that they portray through music and performances. On the other hand, AI-powered groups are set by the program to be attractive. It might be a struggle to connect pure emotions and authenticity with the fans which is very significant in this industry. You can prove this by watching any K-pop groups on Korean music comeback shows such as SBS Inkigayo and MBC Music Core, and you will notice different facial expressions and emotions they show in different shows but the same song. These unscripted moments create a powerful connection that is hard for AI to replace.
- Fan Connection and Community: The bond between K-pop idols and their fans strongly goes beyond music. There were many obstacles to fight against before becoming an idol. For example, there is the documentary of LE SSERAFIM on HYBE Labels YouTube Channel which reveals how they prepared before they debuted. In the video, they were asked by HYBE’s artist management team leader, Kim Hyeong Eun, to diet for their debut. After the request was made, Sakura, the oldest member shed tears and confessed the hardship of dieting to the artist manager team. After the video was released, the fans feel connect with their idols’ journeys, struggles, and successes. AI idols, lacking real-life experiences, might struggle to convey the same level of connection and community spirit to the fans.
2. The Power of Storytelling and Narrative:
- Each K-pop group has different groups, music videos, concept photos, and a variety of show concepts. Human idols have interesting experiences and characteristics to adopt themselves in compelling group narratives. Also, knowing how to fix unexpected events. AI idols, on the other hand, might lack the ability to participate in this storytelling or adapt to unexpected situations naturally. For example, there is BABYMONSTER’s “Last Evaluation” which is a series most likely documenting the final assessments of trainees competing for a spot in YG Entertainment’s upcoming girl group. This series shows the impactful real-life personalities and journeys of the BABYMONSTERS members before they debuted.

3. The Importance of Live Performance and Artist Growth:
- Live performances: The most crucial core of K-pop is the energy and connection between idols and audiences during live performances. During the live shows, human idols can improvise, and go with the flow even if the show has some mistakes along with their fans. While AI idols can deliver flawless virtual performances, they lack the ability to improvise, interact with the audience in real time, or showcase growth over time. For example, Jennie, Lisa, Jisoo, and Rosé of BLACKPINK have shown improvement in stage presence, vocal, and rap skills over time, leading to an increase in fan base and fan connection. The most obvious development of their improvise skills is BLACKPINK’s Coachella stage in 2023.

4. The Ethical Considerations:
- Labor and Creativity: There is a dispute and concern that AI could replace human idols entirely raises ethical questions about fair treatment. Furthermore, since AI-powered groups are not humans, the compensation for human creators behind AI idols as well as music is the issue that should be raised.
- Fan Manipulation and Control: Over-reliance on AI for content creation could lead to a sense of manipulation or a loss of control for fans who value the unpredictable and organic nature of K-pop. There might be a loss of control for K-pop fans who give importance to the unpredictable and organic nature of K-pop. Therefore, the full reliance on AI for creating various content is still unsuitable in this industry.
5. The Evolving Role of AI: Collaboration, Not Replacement
Instead of viewing AI as harmful, K-pop can leverage it as a powerful tool:
- Enhanced Creativity: AI can be the assistance of human songwriters and producers. Helping them to have more time to explore new ideas and develop their skill in creating music. It can also help songwriters and producers to finish the work faster.
- Personalized Content: AI can personalize the K-pop experience for fans, creating unique content and fostering deeper engagement. For example, AI assists the Weverse application by Hybe Entertainment by powering interactive features like personalized quizzes, polls, or games that fans can engage with to connect with their favorite artists and other fans.
- Global Expansion: AI translation tools powered by AI have been beneficial in breaking down language barriers and connecting K-pop with a wider global audience. For example, the Weverse application by Hybe Entertainment has AI-powered translation tools that can help break down language barriers, allowing fans from all over the world to interact with each other and the artists on the platform, in addition to its ability to analyze cultural nuances and preferences to ensure content resonates with fans in different regions.

While AI is undoubtedly changing the K-pop landscape, it’s unlikely to replace human idols entirely. The pure emotions, real connection, and artistic growth which are human elements are likely to remain irreplaceable. The future of K-pop tends to rely upon collaborative working where AI improves the talents and creativity of human idols, pushing the boundaries of music, performance, and fan engagement in exciting new ways. Let’s continue to give love and support to our beloved idols.
