On February 2, 2024, Apple released its newest innovation the “Vision Pro”, a headset with the ability to seamlessly blend the digital content with the real physical spaces by using augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). Vision Pro blurs the lines between the digital and physical realms, creating a seamless fusion of virtual content and real-world environments. This technology opens up a world of possibilities from better communications, social connections, collaboration, education, and entertainment.
This blog post is going to talk further about the possibilities and the impacts that Vision Pro will bring to the world now and in the future and additionally, some of my opinions.
Defining Communication
Of course, with the technology of Vision Pro, it helps us to communicate more effectively and conveniently. Normally you would have to meet up or video call to talk to your friends face-to-face in real time. Now, imagine being able to meet your friends in a virtual space with realistic avatars. Moreover, the virtual environment can be customized to your specific desires. Despite the distance, anyone with Vision Pro will be able to gather anywhere at any time! This would make communication way easier than before.
As mentioned above, Vision Pro allows you to meet up in a virtual space. This means that working and collaborating will be easier too! You would be able to work with your colleagues in the co-working space which allows brainstorming and creating 3 dimensional prototypes. For example, being able to design your new product package, starting from discussing ideas, and sketching models, to trying out different materials and testing out to find the best solution for your product. So you don’t need to be physically in the meeting allowing for more efficient and creative collaboration, even from different time zones. Vision Pro is bridging the gap between the digital and physical worlds.
But Vision Pro isn’t just for work. It’s also great for connecting with friends and family. Imagine celebrating a birthday or watching a movie together in a virtual space. You can hang out, play games, and have fun, no matter where everyone is. It’s like having a virtual hangout spot that’s always open.
Bridging Social Connection
The Vision Pro has the potential to change how we socialize and interact with our friends and families in a way that is realistic and convenient. The shared virtual spaces can be like clubs where they gather people with the same interests. Imagine being able to host a night game party, movie theater, sports events, or even concerts as if you were there in person. For instance, if you want to go to a concert but you don’t want to be packed in a crowd all hot and uncomfortable. Vision Pro can give you the parallel experience as if you were there in the concert while you can be physically at home or in your personal space. This allows us to socially connect regardless of where we are.
Or, consider being able to virtually attend your loved one’s birthdays or even graduation ceremonies when you are physically in the far places. You can meet up in the virtual spaces complete with customizable environments and interactive objects. Personally, I find these shared virtual experiences exciting. Being able to feel like I am physically present with distant loved ones, rather than just seeing them on a screen in video calls, could bring families and friends closer together in meaningful ways, despite the location.
Mobile Working Station
As mentioned, with Vision Pro’s augmented reality (AR) technology that can blend digital content with the real physical world, it can provide you flexible and productive workspace. With this flexibility, you will be able to work anywhere, from a car or even in a train because Vision Pro has an ability to track your hand and gesture precisely allowing you to interact with digital content as if it were a physical object like a computer or laptop. You could grab windows, scroll through documents, or type on virtual keyboards by using only just your two hands.
Imagine being able to open multiple customizable displays and taps floating in your field of view, allowing you to have different apps, documents, and windows arranged how you want them. You could have a virtual desktop showing multiple displays right in front of you. This allows you to be able to do your work much faster and easier because you don’t need to find a table or cafe to work outside anymore.
Revolutionizing Education and Training
The Vision Pro also could be seen as a potentially useful tool used in education. Students can go into the virtual world to visit sites and explore the topic that they are interested in. For example, the topic could be about humans, students can explore the information on the website, look at the anatomy of human bodies, check the body parts, and get to see how each of the body systems work, which will help the students get a better understanding of the topic.
It could lie in the connection between the students and teachers as it will be a lot more accessible for the students to get in contact with the teacher, which will technically be the same for the teacher as well. As the fact that some certain individuals, who would have trouble communicating with other people, especially teachers for those who are considered students, when they are in a face-to-face situation. Many of those individuals seemed to be able to communicate through online platforms better or by texting. With Vision Pro coming into the industry, the students can practice their communication skills as it would stimulate the world as they can be in a simulation of a face-to-face situation with the teacher, and the next time they see each other in the real world, it won’t be as awkward for the students as it used to be.
Vision Pro can also change how we learn and explore. Students can go on virtual field trips to far-off places, or even travel back in time to learn about history. It’s like having a classroom that can take you anywhere. And for professionals, it’s a way to practice new skills and techniques in a safe, virtual environment.
Enhancing Creativity and Entertainment
Entertainment is another area where Vision Pro shines. Gamers can dive into the virtual worlds, where they can explore, compete, and interact like never before. It’s like being inside your favorite video game. And for artists and creators, it’s a canvas for bringing their ideas to life in three-dimensional space.
The use of Vision Pro also supports artists and individuals to express their creativity, and broaden entertainment experiences for people. In the creativity aspect, the discovery of this technology creates spaces for individuals to spread their creativity to larger audiences in clearer aspects and dimensions. For instance, in the past, before this technology was created, artists normally expressed their thoughts and creativity through arts, literature, etc. However, after the Vision Pro era, artists can create a new form of art, which allows audiences to go through directly to the artist’s thoughts to understand the narratives in clearer visions. In terms of entertainment experiences, the Vision Pro can be used to create a connection between the audiences and the entertainment, music, and movies for example. In the past, 3D glasses were adapted for use in the movie industry to help audiences understand the movie better understanding as it creates reality within the scene. and also gives immersive experiences to the audiences. This falls into a similar scenario to the Vision Pro.
Addressing Potential Concerns
While using Vision Pro provides various benefits, there are also drawbacks associated when it comes to a rise in usage. For example, using too much Vision Pro can lead to many problems like health problems for motion sickness while using Vision Pro. Some users may experience motion sickness due to the sensory disconnect between virtual and physical movements, leading to dizziness. Social Disconnect while using Vision Pro can lead people to isolation from the real world and reduced interaction with each other potentially impacting social skills.
Security problems are also concerning as we can see that the technology involving virtual reality is still in the process of development, which means that hackers could potentially access the data through cyberattacks. And the concept of Vision Pro is still brand new for people to understand the aftereffects, especially among children. As parents need to restrict the usage of Vision Pro for them as the children won’t have the self-control over the amount of time they can spend on the Vision Pro. Like mentioned above about the health problems, for children it could be much worse as their bodies are still developing and should get the least playtime on these types of technology.
